SMART stands for Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target. It is a state solar incentive program administered by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources. The current version is SMART 3.0. Qualifying solar systems can receive payments based on how much electricity the system generates. For Program Year 2026, qualifying systems of 25 kW or less have a standard flat incentive rate of $0.03 per kWh, while qualifying low income systems have a rate of $0.06 per kWh. Actual eligibility and compensation are determined during the application process.

Your savings depend on your electricity usage, system size, available sunlight, utility rates, financing, and how much energy your system produces. A properly sized solar system can significantly reduce the amount of electricity you need to purchase from the utility. Eligible excess electricity may also generate net metering credits. If your roof is near the end of its useful life, it is usually better to replace or repair it before installing solar panels. Solar panels can remain on a roof for decades, so installing them over a roof that will soon need replacement could require the panels to be removed and reinstalled later. A solar installer or roofing professional should inspect the roof first and determine whether repairs or replacement are recommended.

Possibly. Some shade does not automatically disqualify a home from solar. The amount of shade, the direction of the roof, the time of day the shading occurs, and the available unshaded roof area all affect solar production. A solar assessment can determine whether panels can be positioned on a better section of the roof. In heavily shaded situations, alternatives such as tree trimming, ground mounted solar, or community solar may also be considered.

Yes, Eversource and National Grid customers can potentially qualify for SMART 3.0, provided the solar project meets the program's eligibility requirements. SMART is available through Massachusetts' three investor owned electric utilities: Eversource, National Grid, and Unitil. Being a customer of one of these utilities does not automatically guarantee approval, because the solar system must still meet SMART requirements and complete the application and interconnection process.
